Google Ads

Google Ads for small businesses: a plain-English starter guide

· 6 min read

Google Ads is the fastest way to put your business in front of people who are searching for exactly what you sell. It's also the fastest way to burn money if it's set up badly. Here's how it really works, in plain English.

How Google Ads works

You choose the searches you want to appear for (“emergency electrician manchester”, “wedding florist near me”), write an ad, and set a budget. When someone searches, Google runs an instant auction — and you only pay when someone clicks your ad. That's why it's called pay-per-click.

What's a sensible starting budget?

There's no magic number — it depends on what a click costs in your industry and what a customer is worth to you. As a rule of thumb, most local UK service businesses can test meaningfully from around £300–£600 a month in ad spend. The key word is test: start focused, measure, then scale what works. Spreading a small budget across too many keywords is the most common way to get nothing.

The mistakes that burn money

  • No conversion tracking. If you can't see which clicks became calls or enquiries, you can't improve anything. Set this up before spending a pound.
  • Broad, vague keywords. Bidding on “plumber” drowns you in irrelevant clicks. Specific, local, intent-driven phrases convert far better.
  • No negative keywords. Telling Google what you don't want (“jobs”, “free”, “DIY”) is half the craft.
  • Sending clicks to your homepage. An ad about boiler repairs should land on a boiler-repair page with a clear way to enquire — not a generic front door.
  • Set and forget. Accounts need regular pruning. Costs creep up when nobody is watching.

When Google Ads is the right choice

Ads shine when you need enquiries now, when you're testing a new service or offer, or while your SEO builds in the background. If a customer is worth hundreds or thousands of pounds to you, even a modest campaign can pay for itself many times over.

Our honest take

Managed well, Google Ads is one of the most measurable, controllable ways to grow — you can see exactly what you spent and exactly what came back. Managed badly, it quietly drains a budget. If you're running ads already and aren't sure what they're returning, that's the first question worth answering — and it's one we're happy to look at on a free call.
