5 website mistakes that quietly cost small businesses customers
When we review small-business websites, the same handful of problems appear again and again. None of them are dramatic — that's exactly why they go unnoticed while quietly costing enquiries every week.
1. Hiding your contact details
If a visitor has to hunt for your phone number or email, many won't bother. Put your contact details in the header or top bar of every page, make phone numbers tappable on mobile, and keep a short contact form one click away.
2. Talking about yourself instead of the customer
“We were founded in…” is fine on an about page, but your homepage should answer the visitor's only real question: can you solve my problem? Lead with what you do, who it's for, and why they can trust you.
3. No proof
Claims are cheap; evidence converts. Real photos of your work, genuine reviews, recognisable client names, before-and-after results — even one strong piece of proof outperforms paragraphs of self-description.
4. A weak or missing call to action
Every page needs an obvious next step, phrased around value: “Get a free quote” beats “Submit”. One primary action per page, visible without scrolling, repeated at the bottom.
5. Forms that ask for too much
Every extra field loses people. For a first enquiry you need a name, a way to reply, and a message — that's it. You can gather the details on the call.
The good news
These are all fixable — often without a full rebuild. If you'd like a second pair of eyes on your site, we'll happily point out the quick wins in a free, no-obligation review.
