Your Google Business Profile is not set-and-forget any more
For years the advice on Google Business Profile was straightforward: claim it, fill it in, add photos, collect reviews, leave it alone. For a local business that was usually enough.
Through 2026 that stopped being true, and the change is worth understanding because local search is the one part of organic search that AI Overviews did not gut. If you serve an area, this is where your remaining organic opportunity lives.
What changed
Relevance now outweighs raw proximity. Being nearest used to be close to decisive. Google now weighs how well a business matches what was actually asked. That is genuinely good for specialists โ if you do one thing well and say so precisely, you can outrank a closer generalist.
Engagement signals separate the top few. Analysts through 2026 reported a shift toward popularity and behavioural signals โ clicks, calls, direction requests, interactions with the listing. These are what now distinguish position one from position four among businesses that all look similar on paper.
Completeness is weighted more heavily than it was. Every missing attribute, unanswered question and stale opening hour is a gap. Not just as a ranking input, but because the customer comparing you with a fuller listing draws a conclusion about which business is more on top of things.
It was also a volatile year โ three local algorithm updates in four weeks between February and April 2026. If your visibility moved around this year and you changed nothing, that is probably why.
The audit, in half an hour
Open your profile and be honest about each of these.
- Categories. Primary category is the single most influential field. Is yours the most specific accurate option, or a broad one you picked years ago? Add secondary categories for what you genuinely do.
- Services and products. Listed individually, described in the words customers use. This is the field most often left empty, and it is directly what relevance is matched against.
- Attributes. All of them. Accessibility, parking, payment methods, appointment requirements. These become filters, and an unset attribute filters you out.
- Hours, including holidays. Wrong hours produce a specific and memorable kind of bad review.
- Questions. Anyone can ask, anyone can answer, and a wrong answer left standing is worse than no answer. Check this monthly. You can and should post the questions you get asked most and answer them yourself.
- Photographs. Recent, real, and of the actual place and work. Stock imagery is obvious and does nothing.
- Reviews. Ask consistently, reply to all of them, and reply to the bad ones like a business rather than a defendant.
What to do monthly
Twenty minutes, once a month, in the calendar:
- Post something โ a job you finished, a seasonal note, an offer. Posts are a freshness signal and almost nobody bothers.
- Add two or three photos from work you actually did.
- Answer any new questions.
- Reply to every review since last time.
- Check the insights: calls, direction requests, website clicks. Those are your real numbers.
That is the entire discipline. It beats an expensive quarterly report because the signals that matter are engagement signals, and engagement responds to activity.
Where the profile is not enough
The listing and the website work together. Consistent name, address and phone number everywhere. A page on your site for each service you offer and each area you cover โ properly written, not spun. The profile establishes relevance; the site is what supports it.
We covered the foundations in local SEO for UK small businesses, and that groundwork has not changed. What has changed is that maintenance is now part of the job rather than an optional extra.
The honest bit
This does not need an agency. A business owner doing twenty focused minutes a month will outperform a retainer where nobody logs in. If you would rather not, that is a fine reason to hand it over โ but hand it over knowing what good looks like, so you can tell whether you are getting it.
If you want a second pair of eyes, book a free call and we will go through the profile with you. Where it turns into ongoing work, that is what our SEO service covers โ and it applies as much to restaurants and trades as to anyone else.
