How to get cited by AI search when you're a small business

ยท 7 min read

If AI Overviews are taking the click, the next question is obvious: how do you get named inside the answer instead of being the source that goes uncredited?

The encouraging part is that this is one of the few areas of search where being small is not automatically a disadvantage. Citation is not primarily a domain-authority contest. It rewards material that is specific, current, clearly attributed and easy to lift a sentence out of โ€” and a small business with real prices and real experience can produce that more credibly than a content farm can.

Understand what is being assembled

A generated answer is stitched together from passages, not pages. The unit that gets picked up is a paragraph or a list item that cleanly answers one question. This has a practical consequence most people miss: a brilliant page that buries its answer in paragraph nine will lose to an adequate page that answers in paragraph one.

Six things that actually help

1. Answer the question in the first fifty words. Then expand. The old copywriting habit of building to a conclusion works against you here. State the answer, then justify it.

2. Be specific enough to be worth quoting. โ€œWebsites vary in costโ€ is unquotable. โ€œA brochure site for a UK small business typically runs from ยฃ999, a CMS site from ยฃ1,999โ€ is a sentence that can be lifted whole. Specificity is the single biggest lever, and it is one most small businesses avoid out of nervousness about publishing prices.

3. Publish the things only you know. Your actual lead times. What a job in your trade actually involves. The mistake customers in your sector always make. This is first-hand material, and there is no other source for it.

4. Date things, and keep them current. An answer engine assembling a response about 2026 prefers a page that says 2026. Undated pages age invisibly. Put a date on it and revisit it.

5. Use structure the way it was intended. One question per heading, phrased the way a person would ask it. Short lists for anything enumerable. A genuine FAQ where you have genuine repeat questions. This is not a trick โ€” it is the same structure that makes a page readable, which is why it works.

6. Make the technical basics boringly correct. Crawlable, fast, sensible headings, schema where it genuinely applies. None of this gets you cited on its own, and all of it can stop you being considered. Technical SEO covers the fixes worth doing.

What does not work

  • Generating volume with AI. Material assembled from what everything else already says is exactly what a summary replaces. You cannot win a citation contest by being averagely correct at scale.
  • Keyword density. This did not work before and works less now.
  • Hedging. โ€œIt depends on your requirementsโ€ is unciteable. If it genuinely depends, say what it depends on and give the range.

How to check whether it is working

There is no clean report for this yet, so the practical method is manual and takes twenty minutes a month:

  • List your ten most commercially important questions.
  • Ask each of them in Google and in one AI assistant.
  • Record whether an answer appears, and whether you are cited.
  • Watch the trend, not any single result โ€” these outputs vary between runs.

Alongside that, watch referral traffic from AI assistants in your analytics. The volumes are small, but the visits tend to be unusually well-qualified: someone arriving from a cited answer has already read a summary of you and chosen to come anyway.

The honest expectation

Citation will not replace the traffic that AI Overviews removed. Nobody should sell it to you as if it will. What it does is keep you present in the surface where people now form their shortlist โ€” and for a business that lives on being one of three names someone considers, that is worth doing properly.

The work here is mostly writing better, more specific pages, which happens to be what makes a site convert anyway. If you want a hand with that, our SEO service starts with what you already have, and a free call will tell you whether it is worth it in your market.
