What "modern hosting" actually means, and how to check yours

Every host claims to be fast, modern and enterprise-grade. None of those words mean anything. What does mean something is which protocols the platform actually supports, because that is a decent proxy for whether anyone is still maintaining it.

You can check the important ones in about two minutes, without being technical.

HTTP/3 — the one that separates current from coasting

HTTP is the protocol browsers use to fetch pages. Version 3 rebuilt the transport underneath it, and the practical differences are real:

  • Connections establish in 0–1 round trips instead of 2–3. On a mobile connection to a distant server, that is a visible saving before anything downloads.
  • One slow file no longer blocks the others. Under the old model, a stalled response held up everything behind it.
  • Connections survive a network change. Walking out of the office and switching from wifi to mobile data no longer restarts everything.

That last point is why adoption is highest in mobile-first markets — Italy, Brazil and India lead — and why it matters more for a site serving customers on phones than the raw numbers suggest.

As of 2026, measured adoption sits somewhere between 21% and 39% depending on what is being counted: W3Techs reports about 39% of websites supporting it, while page-load measurements come in nearer 21%, and Cloudflare sees about 35% across its network. We quote the range rather than pick the flattering end, because the spread is the honest answer.

Either way, this is no longer a future technology. A host that does not offer it in 2026 is behind.

TLS 1.3 — the encryption underneath the padlock

TLS is what makes the s in https. Version 1.3 is faster than 1.2 and removed a long list of obsolete, weak options.

It is also mandatory for HTTP/3, so the two travel together. A host offering HTTP/3 has TLS 1.3 by definition.

The check that matters more: is your host still accepting TLS 1.0 or 1.1? Those are long deprecated, and continuing to accept them says nobody has reviewed the configuration in years.

IPv6 — quietly important

The internet ran out of the original address space years ago. IPv6 is the replacement, and a substantial share of mobile traffic in particular is IPv6-native.

A site with no IPv6 address still works — traffic is translated — but it adds a hop and depends on infrastructure that is being wound down over time. Support costs a host nothing to add. Its absence tells you something.

Two minutes, four checks

Nothing here needs a developer. Use any free SSL and HTTP test tool, or your browser's own developer tools (Network tab, add the “Protocol” column):

  1. Does it serve HTTP/3? You will see h3 in the protocol column. h2 is acceptable. http/1.1 in 2026 means nobody is looking after this.
  2. Is TLS 1.3 supported, and 1.0/1.1 refused?
  3. Is there an AAAA record? That is your IPv6 address.
  4. Is the certificate renewing automatically? Expired certificates take sites down every single day, and there has been no excuse for it for years.

What this does and does not tell you

Being honest about the limits of this test: protocol support does not make a slow site fast. If your pages ship four megabytes of unoptimised images, HTTP/3 will deliver that bloat marginally more efficiently and your visitors will still wait. Most speed problems are in the site, not the transport.

What protocol support tells you is whether the platform is maintained. A host that shipped HTTP/3, keeps TLS current and offers IPv6 is a host whose engineers are still paying attention. One still serving HTTP/1.1 over TLS 1.2 with no IPv6 has been running unattended for a long time, and everything else about it is probably equally stale — including the software versions your site depends on and the speed of the security patching you cannot see.

That is the real reason to check. Not the milliseconds. The signal.

If yours fails the test

Do not panic-migrate. Ask your host whether HTTP/3 is on the roadmap; on some platforms it is a setting rather than a rebuild. Putting a modern CDN in front of an older host also gets you most of the benefit without moving anything, and is frequently the cheapest fix.

If the answer is a blank look, that is your answer about the platform generally.
